Absolutely beautiful Rick. This has been my first Father’s Day as a father, and having lost my own a few years ago I envy you for still being able to seek your dad’s approval. I miss it. But as you put it, I’m excited to “pass along the stories that matter and with dignity to set aside the ones that don’t”. The curation is going to be marvelous
Ok I’m sold on the principles of it means I can be biking for hours at age 88! Happy Father’s Day! This was such a lovely tribute. I love this idea of “authoring” people. It’s so funny to see how your dad is clearly one of the people who encouraged you to take risks, even a small one with the cake.
"But I believe someone becomes a father the day they take inventory of their own stories and make a conscious choice about which ones they’ll pass along and which ones they’ll allow to fade away by deciding not to repeat, enact, and stage them for their own kids." This is really wise. There's a lot here. And I completely agree - true fathers do this through conscious 'authorship'.
This is so great, Rick. Your dad sounds incredible, and I love his three principles. I also love that he taught through his actions more than his words. I hope that my daughter one day can reflect on our relationship and feel the way you do about yours. I hope you had a wonderful Father’s Day!
Such a beautiful piece, Rick. Your dad sounds like a wonderful man. I'm adopting his three principles, especially the 2nd one.
My dad is also a really stand-up guy. He supports everything I do and is often the behind-the-scenes guys (filming me, giving feedback etc). Strong and supportive parents are the best gift anyone could have!
This is genius Rick: “But I believe someone becomes a father the day they take inventory of their own stories and makes a conscious choice about which ones they’ll pass along and which ones they’ll allow to fade away by deciding not to repeat, enact, and stage them for their own kids.”
The entire essay is so meaningful. Those of us fathers will undoubtedly author a bit differently, more intentionally and consciously, having taken in your perspectives.

Rick this is such a beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing your dad's wisdom alongside your own with the photos to go along with it.
Little Ricky!!! 🥲 I loved those pictures.
What a wonderful tribute. I'm all for your father's guiding principles!
